When it comes to hairstyles, everyone has asked this one question at least once in their lifetime: should I get bangs? For those afraid of commitment, they might consider curtain bangs for a softer launch into the look. For those who are ready to go all in, there’s a new trend sweeping social media that experts predict will be big this year: micro bangs.

You may or may not already be familiar with this forehead-grazing type of haircut. If you don’t, here’s the lowdown on the popular style, plus inspiration photos to bring to your next salon visit.

What Are Micro Bangs?

Micro bangs, otherwise known as baby bangs, fall above your eyebrows. “They’re known for being super blunt and short, but there are actually many types,” hairstylist Devin Toth tells PS. “They can be curly, curtain, choppy, wispy, and so on.”

You’ve likely seen the style on some of your favorite celebrities over the years, from Zendaya’s baby bangs at the Met Gala in 2018 (and 2017, for that matter), Emma Roberts’ version of the trend at the 2018 Critics’ Choice, Lupita Nyong’o’s beaded micro fringe during Paris Fashion Week, and Halle Berry’s take, albeit temporarily, at the 2021 Oscars.

“Micro bangs can add flair to any hairstyle and work on all hair types — super curly, pin straight, updos, pixies, long, short, thick, thin, box braids, Afro,” said Toth. The list goes on and on.
