Kim Petras is sharing some words of encouragement for her fellow trans fans and opening up about her gender journey as a teenager. On Monday, the star posted a “little pride [month] message” about self-acceptance.
“‘Accept yourself’ was something doctors and psychologists would frequently tell me when I went to see them at 8, at 10, at 12, and at 16 … As in, ‘You can still wear makeup and present as whatever, but why would you need to go so far,’” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “Why can’t you just accept yourself?”
“They couldn’t fathom that I had accepted myself since I can remember and accepted everything I knew I needed to do to be myself,” she added.
Petras continued that being told to “accept yourself can be a pretty shitty thing to say to someone,” writing, “Some nerd online has said it to me every day of my life since I can remember, and their dads are probably obsessed with me.” She ended her note by declaring: “That being said, accept yourself and happy pride.”
During a cover story with Out Magazine last year, Petras shared that she was “very suicidal as a kid” before being supported by her parents in her gender journey. By 13, the singer was publicly discussing her transition on television. “My mother believed me that I was a girl and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support and everyone who believed in me to this point,” the singer said onstage as she accepted her Grammy for “Unholy” last year.
The new Pride statement from Petras comes after she canceled festival appearances this summer to focus on “some health issues.”
“I love u so much and I’ll make it up to you and be back better than ever very soon,” she said in late April. Last week, Petras was also named the face of MAC Cosmetics.
