“The story of how a band led by a genius from Chicago changed our way of thinking, our minds and our hearts,” Roots drummer says of band-approved project out next year

Questlove’s documentary about Sly Stone hasn’t hit screens yet, but the Roots drummer knows which artist he will next fix his cameras on: Earth, Wind & Fire.

Fittingly, on the 21st of September,  Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson announced his next project on social media Saturday, and revealed that “the definitive story of the elements” would arrive in 2025.

“The story of how a band led by a genius from Chicago changed our way of thinking, our minds and our hearts,” Questlove added. “Having been baptized in the afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly I’ve learned about and rediscovered myself in the process.”

The Oscar-winning Summer of Soul documentarian added, “I’m so excited to be directing a documentary preserving their positive but VERY vulnerable and real story of Soul, Self & Struggle. This is the story of joy, persistence, love, pain, magic and self discovery. This is Earth, Wind & Fire.”

Earth, Wind & Fire’s Verdine White, Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson are all on board with the project, as the trio added in a statement (via Variety), “We look forward to this in-depth journey of our band, and are so excited to have Questlove directing the documentary.”

Earlier this year, Questlove gave a progress report on his long-in-the-works Sly Stone doc, noting that Hulu acquired the film, but that it didn’t have a premiere date yet.
