Norman’s Rare Guitars, a singular shop in Los Angeles that has catered to some of the biggest musicians in the world over the years, is getting its own special documentary, premiering Dec. 31 on Netflix.
The film digs into the history and legacy of the store, as well as its founder and owner, Norman Harris, renowned not only for his collection of vintage instruments but also for his ability to pair the right guitar with the right player. Kiefer Sutherland, who executive produced the film, tells Rolling Stone the movie is “not just about a guitar store or the incredible artists who have found the instrument of their dreams. It’s a celebration of a life well-lived, and it can serve as a guide on how to live your own with purpose and passion.”
He continues: “Norm’s Rare Guitars and Norm himself have seen it all. This film represents the past, present, and future of music from the streets. It captures the romance of the guitar and the guitar player. A must-see for any music lover!”
A recent trailer for the film captures the store’s essence and importance, with footage of everyone from Post Malone to Tom Petty stopping by Norm’s. It also finds Harris himself, as well as his family and friends, discussing his lifelong dedication to the store, even amidst some recent health troubles.
“Feeling incredibly blessed and grateful to have been surrounded by some of the world’s finest musicians,” Harris tells Rolling Stone. “What started as a hobby turned into a business, and along the way, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the kindest, most genuine people on earth. Time has flown by — it feels like just a blink of an eye… I hope [the movie] resonates with the public as more than just a story about guitars — but as a celebration of community, passion, and the spirit of a small business.”
Norman’s Rare Guitars was directed by Devin Dilmore, while Harris’ daughter, Sarah Edwards, also served as a producer on the film. Other musicians who’ll feature in the movie include Joe Bonamassa, John Oates, Lenny Kravitz, Slash, Machine Gun Kelly, and late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
