Sibling duo release queer love song “Cuando Estamos Solas” in time for National Coming Out Day

Few Latin artists know how to sing a power ballad like Jesse & Joy. On Friday, the sibling duo released a sweet love song called “Cuando Estamos Solas” about Joy’s love story with Diana Atri in time for National Coming Out Day.

“Today I give you ‘Cuando Estamos Solas,’ a song that comes from the depths of my being and perhaps the most personal one I have shared with you so far,” Joy tells Rolling Stone. “I wish it weren’t necessary to have a day to ‘celebrate coming out of the closet,’ but we will continue to fight to achieve that. In the meantime, today we celebrate those who accept themselves as they are.”

Joy came out in a Twitter post in 2019, revealing she had been in a relationship with another woman for seven years and that they were expecting a child together. (Their daughter Noah is now five years old.)

“As a mother and wife, I want my children to grow up feeling proud of who we are. I hope this song serves as a gift for those who still can’t find the words to express what they feel,” Joy says of the new song. “If ‘Cuando Estamos Solas’ can inspire someone to be honest with themselves, it will be a great honor to return a little of the love that you have always given me.”

“Cuando Estamos Solas” marks the duo’s third release of the year after dropping “Te Perdí” with Banda MS in August and “Lo Que Nos Faltó Decir” back in April. The duo’s last album dropped in 2022, Clichés.

Back in 2020, the group released single “Love (Es Nuestro Idioma)” as part of a campaign headed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS with the hoping of banning conversion therapy.

“Sexual orientation is not something that can or must be cured,” read a statement by Jesse & Joy at the time. “‘Conversion therapy’ subjects people to various acts of torture such as: deprivation of liberty, electroshocks, corrective rapes and exorcisms, among many other forms of violence.”
