Joanna Peña-Bickley on Being a Pioneer in Generative AI

Must read

Joanna Peña-Bickley is a design engineer known as the mother of cognitive experience design and a pioneer in generative AI. She’s been working in the tech industry for more than 25 years, and is currently the CEO of Vibes AI, a company working on smart technologies to make cognitive wellness a daily ritual.

As part of our Tech Chingonas package, Peña-Bickley shares her typical workday, what she’s reading, and her experience as a Jewish Latina in the tech industry. Get to know her journey below.

What inspired you to get into tech?
Reruns of “Star Trek” and 1980s computer literacy courses.

What does a typical workday look like for you?
Starts at 5:30 a.m. I do yoga and meditation, then attend meetings virtually and in person. I surround myself with really smart people to invent a better future.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping others and constant learning and growth.

How did your parents feel about you pursuing a career in tech?
They did not understand what I did for a very long time. But they knew I made money.

What do you always make time for because it makes you feel good?
My four grown children and husband and music.

What are you reading right now?
“No Red Lights” By Alan J. Patricof.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve experienced being a Latina working in tech?
In many situations, I have been the only Jewish Latina at the table, so I take my role as a leader of my community seriously. I trade my privilege to ensure more Latinas and women of color are able to make it to the table.
