I’m the occasionally annoyed, sometimes proud, owner of thin, fine hair. My hair type makes it quick to blow-dry and fairly fast to style, but it doesn’t always look full and oftentimes it falls flat at the roots. I’ve learned that the right products can make a huge difference, and so can getting the perfect haircut, which I think I may have found in the hush cut.

The hush cut, a hairstyle marked by medium or long face-framing layers paired with curtain bangs or wispy bangs, was first popularized in Korea. It went viral on TikTok late last year, and for the last few months, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

I’ve been growing my hair out long, but over the last few months I’ve noticed that the ends of my hair have started to look frayed and stringy. I knew it was time for a cut, and I wanted something that would add more shape and movement. I don’t like to switch up my hairstyle very often, but whenever I do, I visit Sierra Kener at Nine Zero One salon in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Kener is my go-to stylist for anything cut or color related.

When I sat down in her chair and explained what I was looking to do, Kener confirmed that the hush cut would work well for my length and hair type. However, I’ve found that I don’t look great with butterfly-style curtain bang and I’m absolutely not brave enough to opt for wispy fringe, but in order to embrace this style, we did decide to trim my front pieces into a shorter-style curtain bang.

After shampooing and conditioning my hair, we went back to the salon chair and Kener blow dried my hair. She then did a dry cut, so she could see exactly how the layers would fall once my hair was styled. As she was cutting my hair, I immediately noticed a change. Rather than my hair looking stringy and gross toward the ends, it actually looked fuller and thicker. Plus, the shorter front layers gave me volume at the roots and made my hair look like it had tons of movement.

Kener finished off my blowout with the K18 Airwash Dry Shampoo ($48), which helped my style last for the majority of the week I got my hair cut.

Since my hair appointment, I’ve been obsessed with my new look — and I’ve received tons of compliments. Another thing that originally sold me? The look promised to be low-maintenance, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. When I’m done washing it, I use a detangling product and a heat protectant, and then I blow it out. However, it also looks great air-dried, especially if I use Crown Affair’s Texturizing Air Dry Mousse ($38).

As for in-salon upkeep, it also typically only requires tiny trims every eight to 10 weeks, which is great for my busy schedule. Overall, I’m very into my new look.
