Makeup primers are a staple. They can help your makeup last longer, control even the most oily of skin types, and blur imperfections. And sometimes, they even serve as the only layer of base makeup you need. As someone who writes about beauty for a living, it’s safe to say I’ve tested my fair share of primers, but there aren’t many that have landed a permanent spot in my makeup bag.

Obviously, a makeup primer needs to increase the wear time of my makeup, but I happen to have dry, acne-prone skin, so I look for products that are hydrating but also won’t break me out. To be honest, there aren’t a lot of products out there that do it all. However, the product I most recently had the privilege of testing before it launched, Tarte’s Maracuja Juicy Glow Primer ($39), happens to check every box and then some. My prediction? This product is about to go viral — it’s that good.

What I Like About the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Glow Primer

Before I moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2022, I wasn’t a big primer girl. Back when I lived in San Francisco, I could count the number of sweaty days I experienced on one hand, so I didn’t find a real need for primers, setting sprays, or even setting powders.

Now that I’m living somewhere where it’s hot (or at least marginally warm) for the majority of the year, I rely on those products to make sure my makeup stays in place all day. This Tarte primer helps my makeup do just that, but it gives me a gorgeous glow at the same time. I’m a fan of dewy, hydrated makeup looks, and because I have dry skin, I typically stay away from matte products.

This product isn’t sticky, it’s easy to apply with the roller applicator, it’s long-lasting, and it didn’t break me out. I have reactive, acne-prone skin, and while some products can easily break me out in a rash or a bunch of pimples, my skin stayed clear while using this product.

How to Use the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Glow Primer

The brand says you can use this product three different ways: as a primer underneath makeup, on its own to diffuse skin imperfections for a soft finish, or applied to the high points of the face to brighten and highlight. To use the product, you have to press a button on the side, which will dispense the primer while you roll it onto your face.

Personally, I prefer to use this product as a primer underneath my makeup, but I have worn it a few times on its own. I use the shade luminous bronze, which I find gives my skin just the tiniest amount of glow.

What to Consider Before Trying the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Glow Primer

Although the brand says this product can be worn on its own, it doesn’t offer much coverage. I prefer the no-makeup makeup look, so it fits my lifestyle fairly well, but if you’re looking for something with a lot of coverage, just know that this is extremely sheer. It does blur imperfections, but it won’t cover them.

Where is the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Glow Primer Available?
